I see myself as an art practitioner. Practicing art is just like practicing martial arts and both require constant repetition. The purpose is to find a rhyme, just like creating a beautiful pattern on a piece of fabric. Repetition does not mean doing one same thing over and over again. Instead, I see repetition as a way of communicating. So, rather than making statements, my works are more about speaking to the person; oftentimes an intimate conversation. I believe my artistic practices, rather than highlighting and presenting a language of culture, work from within my own ethnic language and culture, yet manages to communicate the shared human attitudes with the rest of the world.
Letter is an important form and manifestation of my on-going series, Reading Between Lines. It is a project of studies on the relationship between text and image. The project primarily explores how text becomes image and image become text; how that relationship can reveal the more muted emotions—of the relationship between human, text, object, sentiment, and memory—through different mediums: drawing, print, painting, photo, film, and video.
